BLACKSMITH LAPWING (Vanellus armatus) (See images below)
The Blacksmith Lapwing has a pied plumage of white, black and grey. It is common from Tanzania to South Africa. The short bill is black and the legs are grey. The eyes are red.
This species of lapwing owes its name to its alarm call which resembles the sound of the blacksmith’s hammer hitting the anvil.
Lapwings are part of the same family as the plover. They are wading birds on long, slender legs, searching for food such as invertebrates in wetlands.
