GREY CROWNED CRANE
GREY CROWNED CRANE (Balearica regulorum) – (See images below)
The Grey Crowned Crane is a bird of eastern and south Africa. It is around one meter (3 ft.) tall and its plumage is mainly grey, with a lighter shade for the neck. There is a crown of beige feathers on the head, and a black puff on the front. The sides of the face are white and there is a red inflatable throat pouch. The bill and the legs are black. The wing ends are rufous, orange and white. This species of crane is capable of roosting in trees as opposed to other crane species, thanks to a specialized hind toe.
The grey crowned crane is the national bird of Uganda. This bird is considered as ‘threatened’ due to damage to its habitat from wetland drainage and pollution from pesticides.
